“Bright & Dark Universe presentations and interviews

In the last decades, thanks to space telescopes and 4m/8m ground-based telescopes, as well as large digital sky surveys, we have collected large datasets which enabled us to set stringent constraints on the distribution of Dark Matter (DM) at different scales, from dwarfs to spirals and giant ellipticals, from clusters of galaxies to large scale structures and cosmological filaments. Supercomputers showed us how the DM is distributed and how it did drive the evolution and assembly of the luminous matter.

Unfortunately, the match of the observations and theoretical predictions is still inconclusive on scales smaller than the Mpc and this is seriously questioning the overall paradigm. The standing discrepancies can be tracked to missing physics in simulations, or on internal systematics of the models which are leaving the combination of different probes (e.g., stellar/gas kinematics, discrete tracers, strong and weak lensing, X-rays) still highly unexploited.

-Are dark haloes cuspy or cored?

-Are their central density slopes changing with the galaxy type and mass?

– Do dark haloes show concentrations as predicted dark matter simulations?

– Do strong and weak lensing agree with measurement from X-rays?

-What are the constraints on dark matter haloes from individual galaxies?

-And from groups and clusters of galaxies?

-Is the DM cold or warm? Or self-interacting?

-What is the effect of baryon feedback on the DM halo distribution?

-Is there room for extended theories of gravity?

– What are the constraints on the DE and its effect on DM on galactic scales?

– What are the perspectives for the ext facilities from ground and space for the Dark sector of the Universe?

These are the questions we expect to address to prepare the observational challenges of the next generation space missions and extremely large ground-based telescopes and discuss whether the DM is yet a viable paradigm to interpret observations. Organized by

The INAF Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte

Established in 1819, the Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte (OAC) is a research institution of the INAF (Italian National Institute for Astrophysics). It is located on the top of the Miradoris hill which dominates the city harbor.

The renewed auditorium is located in the basement of the historical building. The auditorium can host up to 200 people, has free wi-fi Internet connection and it is equipped with video conferencing system.

How to reach it

The INAF-OAC is easy reachable from the Naples Capodichino Airport.

You can take a taxi that will take you to Capodimonte in about 20 min (depending from traffic) with an average cost of about 15 euro.

From the Rail Station it is also suggested to use a taxi (20 to 30 minutes and ~15 euro).

If you want to use public trasportation: take the bus R2 (frequency ~8 minutes) in piazza Garibaldi and get off in Via Medina (close to the Hotel nh Ambassador) then get the R4 bus and get off at the bus stop in via Capodimonte (see map below), then walk to the Observatory (about 10 min).

KiDS – GAMA- VIKING meeting

The joint meeting of the KiDS GAMA VIKING surveys follows the first meeting held in Edinburgh. This round, the meeting is exceptionally host by the Bright & Dark Universe workshop and will be open to non-member scientists that might be interested in knowing more about the KiDS, GAMA and VIKING progresses and results, and seeking for establishing collaboration or data access and usage.

The meeting program will develop in 1.5 days, with plenary sections with updates from the Survey Production Teams and Science Teams and working group sections aimed at discussing technical aspects and updates on the action items established at the Edinburgh meeting.
